This is the sister restaurant to Triple XXX - same menu, prices and delicious greasy spoon food, but has a better (in my opinion) ambiance (tables as well as counter seating, plus more space and a less dated interior), much shorter wait times, and is conveniently located closer to our house. Unlike Triple XXX, they take credit cards. I've only had breakfast here (and at Triple XXX) but there's nothing I don't like about it. The Drew Brees (eggs, potatoes, chicken fried steak and grilled biscuits) is especially good.

My husband and I go here pretty often. It's not the best diner food I've ever had, but it's pretty good and is also inexpensive. Their milkshakes are delicious! A lot of the items are a la cart, so you can customize your meal. For example, the breakfast sandwiches have options of a few different meats and cheeses and are without a side, so you can order and combination of sides you want. Their menu is expansive, but we have only ever ordered breakfast items. The service here is really friendly and will remember you after you drop by a few times. On weekends it can get a little crazy after noon, but even then we are seated within 20 minutes and the service doesn't suffer.

Over the past year we have dined here about a handful of times. The food is always good, not great but for the area it is good. Try the Drew Brees for breakfast. You won't leave hungry. But this last weekend I was delighted by how the staff considered the safety of their staff and customers by not allowing a highchair to be placed in a walkway. This always annoys me at other establishments. The staff has always treated us like old friends. Get there early as they can be very packed for breakfast.

Better for dinner. I had the Purvis burger, again, and it did not disappoint. My wife got the tenderloin and LOVED IT!

I have to disagree with lesser reviews of this restaurant because I could eat there at least twice daily. The breakfast menu is so wonderfully varied that you can eat light or like a lumberjack if you choose. The biscuits and gravy are really good which is a litmus test for any restaurant that serves breakfast. The chili is classic good diner chili and the burgers, whatever kind you get with whatever condiments, are amazing. The owners are good, kind, charitable people, which wouldn't matter if the food wasn't so doggone good.

This second time that I have been there and no one even acknowledge that we were at table. Today I was by myself i had been seated about 7 minutes no one even said be with you or anything. The host was not even aware of the tables just watching cash register. I just left no nothing from anyone.

Triple XXX's slightly more sophisticated big sister. I have stopped in here several times, and I am always pleased I have. I tend to always think of this place as an offshoot of Triple XXX, but this place is much more than that. Sure you have the standard burgers, fries and shakes on the menu (delicious by the way), but there is so much more. Here you'll find a menu that is sure to please everyone in your family. From your weird gluten free cousin to your picky chicken tenders loving little brother, you'll find something on the menu. They don't list their menu online, but trust me there is some yummy stuff here. Recently I was drooling over a wrap with turkey and avocado! Milkshakes are off the chain here people. These really taste like the homemade milkshakes you grew up with- none of that fast food "chocolate" stuff. I recently enjoyed a chocolate milkshake here that was amazing. So simple yet classically delicious. However, I wish there was a smaller option available- I had to order a 16 oz milkshake and leave half. Maybe you can split with a friend if you aren't in the mood for a big shake.

I have been to this place quite a few times, and unfortunately it seems like playing roulette when you go, sometimes the food can be quite delicious and other times it is disappointing enough that I swear off of them for awhile. Most recent instance was the complete botching of grilled cheese. The bread was not grilled barely toasted, thes cheese had just barelt melted, and this is over three bucks a sandwich for that. The other infuriating factor is the lack of free refills on soda... if you are going to charge over two bucks for a large fountain drink, you should be able to get a refill on said soda too.

I just moved to West Lafayette and I've already been here like 6 times. It's great. They make really good hashbrowns and the staff is super friendly. I've only been for breakfast but I've heard their burgers are good as well.

I started a help account so that I could give this review. When I was considering locations for my baby shower I will admit this wasn't my first idea. When it was suggested I thought hey good food, fun vibe, why not? When we first contacted the the staff I was welcomed with open arms! I expected a reservation and a few tables set aside but they did so much more!! I was in contact with the general manger and the owner who worked directly with me and the host to make everything we could wish for come true! When we arrived the day of the shower they had an adorable chalkboard set up with our parties name and helped us set up balloons, and other decorations. Everyone was so nice and inviting everyone raved about how friendly the staff was, a few members even help my mother in law carry some of her gifts in! Above and beyond doesn't say enough.

Tasty food, friendly waitstaff, old timey feel. Breakfast all day. We hadn't ever been here before and stopped in based on the other yelp reviews, and I'm incredibly glad we did.

If you love triple XXX food but you don't like the cleanliness of the building then this is the place for you. Exact same menu but a much cleaner facility and super friendly staff. From breakfast to burgers to their world famous root beer you can't go wrong

  • Katherine M.

This was one of the best experiences of my life! Great food and such a variety! The service was stupendous! And the prices were reasonable considering their quality of food and smiles! My server was absolutely delightful. I have to say this place is my favorite restaurant in Indiana. I suggest the Purvis which is their famous burger with peanut butter and onion rings and a large Oreo marshmallow shake! Go here! You won't be disappointed! Ps. Weekends are super busy so get ready to wait for amazing food! (And a table)

  • Nicole B.

Peanut Butter on a burger= GENIUS. The shakes and root beer floats are great too! of course always with a side of sweet potato fries :) I hate when I read reviews and see people saying its too expensive or comparing the food to mc donalds. You are supporting small family business here! The food is very decently priced!

  • Jaime B.

Great local diner! Perfectly cooked eggs every time we come. Fast service, friendly staff. Portions are good-sized, not annoyingly large. Haven't tried anything but breakfast yet, but the other menu choices look really good. Can't recommend this place enough!

  • Ashley K.

To me, everything about this place is fairly average and I don't feel you get that much bang for your buck compared to other diners I've been to and it didn't seem super clean. Also, the fluorescent lighting is horrendous, there's a reason I don't eat in the garage.

This is a staple for our family and my boys were adamant we give Route 66 five stars. Love the small town feel, great service and the food has definitely improved over the years (I don't think the reviews from 2011 reflect today's tastiness). They have created burgers and sandwiches named after local sports greats. There is always a wait on Saturdays and Sundays if you arrive after 10 am but the tables turn over quickly so its ok. No comments on dinner as I have never eaten anything but breakfast and lunch there. Wish it wasn't in a strip mall but that is minor. What I love the most is it's a place our family can all agree on and we always see someone we know when we are there.

    (5)
  • Justin B.

Best in town. I go there almost ever weekend, and have never had a bad experience. foods always great and inexpensive, and the staff are super friendly. The interior is a bit tacky, but if you want a good breakfast, this is your spot.

    (5)
  • Eric C.

I had great expectations, the cheeseburger & fries & coke, I had as a kid. My fries were cold, burger was cold, not juicy, tasted similar to McDonald's quarter pounder. I'll stick with triple xxx. $10 seems a bit high.

My friends and I were in town for a wedding over this past weekend and we just happened to fall in to this cute little diner tucked away in a strip mall! Like most hometown diners, the decor (and clientel) scream "wholesome plain-jane country"...assorted knick-knacks, the required amount of junky memorabilia related to Route 66. This is the type of place you expect to find exactly what you expect: pancakes all day, hamburgers and fries, nothing particularly "special". Except for the part where they serve PEANUT BUTTER HAMBURGERS. Yes, you read that right. Peanut butter. On a hamburger. Now, I confess I am adventurous, but pb on a burger? Being the macho foodie that I am, I instantly decided we must try it so we could see just how bad this idea was. We ordered and I proceeded to watch with gleeful horror as the cook pulled out this industrial size can of JIF (one of the sugariest, crappiest peanut butters out there) and adds it to the mix on the grill. We got the burgers (on plain ol' grocery-store sesame buns) and were fully ready to blast the heck out of this joint...when a miracle occurred. Yes, that burger was in fact a miracle. Somewhere along the way, the Jif had turned into pure magic and light, and my meal was now amazing. Holy crap. So, while on the whole this place remains an average hometown diner - certainly wouldn't drive two hours for it alone - if I am back this way, I will be honored to take on the PBB once more :)

  • Michael L.

I try this place from time to time, and always leave hungry and disappointed. Burnt fries this time, and an 8 dollar burger that was just ok. I always hope that Route 66 (and XXX) will taste like the diners I grew up at. However, they always miss the mark.

    (2)
  • Juan A.

Even though this place is suppose to be just as good as XXX in my opinion the food in here doesn't taste as good as in there. It's good enough and they have some more items on the menu so it's worth a visit to try something different or if you don't want to squeeze in down at XXX on those super busy hours down there.

  • Jarrod D.

Good, friendly, quick service. Have had about half of the breakfast menu so far and the biscuits and gravy along with the Albuquerque omelet are my favorites. Wife loves the biscuits with jam. One of only a few non-chain restaurants in town and by far my favorite of any breakfast place.

Route 66 (and the same-owner Triple XXX on campus) is a Lafayette/West Lafayette institution, even featured on Food Network. My wife and I have been to '66 numerous times - usually for lunch/dinner food, but a few times for breakfast as well. The food's always good. We usually get burgers, and they've got an interesting assortment, including one with peanut butter on it - which is surprisingly popular. Of course, you can also just build a burger any way you like in true diner fashion. Basically, it's old-school "American diner" type stuff; good enough, but not "super awesome." Personally, I think it would be cool if they advertised "... with locally made D&R Market bacon" instead of "... with OSCAR MAYER bacon." Local is better than hardcore-mass-produced, every day of the week, in my book. Ditto if they used local meat, hand-cut potatoes for fries, and so on. But, they're obviously doing something right to be such an institution in the area. The food IS good, it's just not "awesome" - and the ingredients used are very industrial/mass-produced.

The Route 66 diner is the "G-rated" cousin of it's sister diner, The "Triple XXX" on the campus of beautiful Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. Don't get me wrong. Both Route 66 and Triple XXX are family establishments (not strip clubs) and you will likely have a great experience at either location. The difference is the regular clientele. The menu at both the Triple XXX and Route 66 are similar if not identical. The lunch/dinner food is fine, but if you're going to either location for the first time, you should be going for breakfast regardless of the time of day. For mostly sentimental reasons, I highly recommend the Drew Brees Favorite (2 eggs, 1/3 lb. burger, potatoes covered with sausage gravy & 2 grilled buttermilk biscuits W/ jelly). Back to the clientele: As you might imagine, the Triple XXX has a strong following among the local university students, and the atmosphere reflects that. It's fun and at times extremely entertaining if that's what you're looking for, but if Granny is in town to watch her baby girl walk for graduation, you're likely better off taking her to Route 66 for a more family friendly atmosphere. Let's just say that people don't get arrested for public intox after falling off of their stool and through the plate glass window at Route 66, where this might be a more probable occurrence at Triple XXX. Again, both establishments are great, just pick your location with the desired experience in mind.
